KAYAKING

Penelope’s Paddle (Gull Island & Peterson Bay)
(3-4 hrs)
Includes a 2-mile hike to Moose Head Point
Difficulty: easy/moderate

Embark on an adventure that begins just steps from your room, as we push off our kayaks from Odyssey Lodge beach. Share the waters of China Poot Bay with whales, seals, otters, seabirds and other ocean critters. On proper tides, you will have a chance to access a sea cave, as well as explore tidal flats and sand bars. Head to Gull Island for a chance to see eagles, puffin, black-legged kittiwakes, common murres and cormorants, along with many other types of birds. From there, you will navigate back to Peterson Bay for a scenic lunch and time to explore the beach and caves of the bay. Following lunch, you will be escorted on a guided hike to Moosehead Point where you will learn about native edible plants — and the poisonous ones. Finish the trip off with a short paddle back around the point, or leave the kayak on the beach and take one of the trails. It’s just a five-minute walk back to the lodge.

Glacier Lake
Includes a 4-5-mile hike to and from the lake
5-6 hours

This kayaking trip is a one-to-two-hour add-on to the Greywingk Glacier hike. Your escapade begins with a 30-minute boat ride from the Odyssey Lodge beach to the glacier trailhead. Taking the same route as the Grewingk Glacier hike, adventurers will trek from the beach up through the mountain forests of Kachemak Bay State Park. Once you have arrived at the picturesque lake, inflatable kayaks will be deployed and launched from the sandy shore. Paddle around icebergs, explore the shoreline or just float gently across the water and enjoy the quietude of the Alaskan wilderness. After beaching the kayaks, have lunch and pick out your favorite spot for a photo. And keep your camera out. There are more photo opportunities around every corner on the hike back down to the beach. Total time kayaking is approximately 1 to 2 hours.

The islands
6-7 hours

Devoted kayakers, this one is for you: a full day on the water. You will experience the inlet and the surrounding waters of Kachemak Bay much like the inhabitants who lived on the peninsula hundreds of years before modern settlers arrived. Paddle alongside unique bluffs and cliffs composed of banded Radiolarian chert and basalt. But stay alert, as well, for fellow sea-goers: seals, otters, sea birds, and occasionally, Orcas and Humpbacks. Travel over kelp forests while you count jellyfish species. This full day of adventure on the water — with a beach stop for lunch — will surely excite any kayak enthusiast.
